Christine Bean » Welcome Back!

Welcome Back!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

My name is Mrs. Christine Bean and I’ll be your child’s 1st grade teacher for the 2024-2025 school year. Ms. Kierra will be assisting me this year. We are so excited to have the opportunity to teach your child and am sure we’re going to have an amazing year together! Through this letter, I’ll explain classroom procedures, assessment details, etc.

Classroom Expectations/Rules

The rules for our classroom are as follows:

  1. Follow all directions quickly.
  2. Listen when the teacher is talking.
  3. Raise your hand for permission to speak or leave your seat.
  4. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  5. Always be respectful, kind, and safe.
  6. Never give less than your BEST!

Behavior Management

The discipline model within our classroom will be as follows:

  1. Warning - Verbal redirect- students will be told to correct their behavior.
  2. Teacher Choice - lose a special privilege (recess or something that may be going on)
  3. Parent Contact/Conference
  4. Office Referral

*Students are expected to follow the classroom rules at all times. I hold them to high expectations because I KNOW they are capable of exhibiting good behavior. Negative behavior that interferes with instruction WILL NOT be tolerated.*

Grading System

The grading scale is as follows:

  • A= 90-100
  • B= 80-89
  • C= 75-79
  • D= 70-74
  • F= 69 and below

Please refer to the SCSD Student Handbook for more information regarding the grading system. If a parent/teacher conference needs to occur, please contact myself or the elementary office. All conferences will have to take place during my planning period which is between 12:35-1:25 each day.

Homework Policy

Students will receive homework at the beginning of each week. They are required to have completed their homework by Friday. Homework will not be graded, but will be checked for completion. Every homework assignment has a purpose and will allow students to practice the skills they’ve already learned.

Assessments

Students will take weekly reading assessments. These assessments will cover the phonics, language, spelling, and reading skills from the current week. Reading is an essential part of success within the classroom and is necessary for students to pass the GATE Assessment. Students will also take math assessments based on topic coverage.  Make sure you pay close attention to the newsletter for each week that will be located in your child’s binder.

Signed Papers

Signed papers will be sent home weekly. Assessments taken on paper will be sent home to be signed. Please check your child’s binder every night to ensure that you are staying up to date and informed on how they’re performing within the classroom.

Attendance

It is extremely important that students are regularly present for school. When a student is absent, it is the responsibility of the student and parent to ensure that all makeup work is completed in a timely manner.  If a student is absent on test day, they will be given their exams on the day that they return to school. Please refer to the SCSD Student Handbook for more information on the attendance policy.

Snack Time

We will have snack time each day. PLEASE send a snack and a drink with your child to school EVERY DAY. I attempt to keep snacks within the room, but this isn’t always the case. Only drinks with tops, straws, or pop-off tops will be allowed (Koolaid jammers, something in a cup, etc.). NO canned drinks will be allowed.

I am extremely excited to get this year started! I can’t wait to see the growth of each student. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thank you for all that you do!
