Biography
Dr. Letonia Johnson is a native of Utica, MS where she attended Mixon Elementary School, Utica Jr. High School, and Hinds County Agricultural High School graduating 3rd in her class. As a first generation college student, she attended Tougaloo College and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. After initially pursuing a law degree, fate would have it that she would enter the realm of education as she joined the Morton Community in 1999. She began her teaching career as a substitute teacher at Morton Elementary, and later became a teacher at Alpha and Omega Academy teaching grades pre-K through 10th grade. During this time, Dr. Johnson attended Jackson State University and received her Master of Arts in Teaching English which certified her to teach English and Social Studies. In 2006, she became a teacher at Morton High School teaching English, Consumer Science and Family Health, and Theater. Morton High School was her home away from home for 6 years as she worked to prepare students for college and their chosen careers. In 2011, Dr. Johnson received an Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Mississippi College providing her with certification in administration. In 2012, she was appointed as the assistant principal of Bettye Mae Jack Middle School, and was later appointed principal. In the spring of 2015, Dr. Johnson was appointed as the principal of Morton Upper Elementary (3rd and 4th grade). Since July of 2023, she currently serves as the elementary principal for Pre-K-6th grade at Scott Central Attendance Center. She was named as the Scott County School District Administrator of the Year for the 2016-2017 school year. She received her doctorate degree from Mississippi College in 2019, and she continues to push herself beyond her limits in an effort to improve her own capabilities so that she can assist in the improvement of teacher and student performance.
Dr. Johnson is a mother of one step-son, Marcus, Jr., and a mother-figure to many of her current and former students. She and her husband, Marcus, Sr., have been married for over 23 years. She is a member of the Pleasant Gift M.B. Church in the Branch community in Morton. Her hobbies include travelling and spending time with her nieces and nephews whenever she can.
Dr. Johnson lives by the mantra, “Good and good enough are never acceptable when you have Greatness living inside you.”
